NEWSNIGHT SCHOOL RIPPLE EFFECTS2008-10-06
We have been supporting some domestic workers from the Hararean suburb of Greendale to continue their education. Most of them did not even finish primary school, let alone secondary, because either their families ran out of money for fees or they were needed to work or help out in the family.
Many have expressed interest in continuing their education so we are helping them to access a night school at the local primary school. Previously the teachers would not show up because they were not being paid enough so we subsidised the programme and now not only the gardeners but many other learners are benefitting too.
Many of the domestic workers have now moved on to better employment or started their own businesses, so the benefits of the programme are already being reaped.
