Volunteers help to clean up Msasa

This year's international Clean Up The World weekend was 18-20 September, but in Harare we made an early start by working with others to clean up the industrial estate of Msasa.

Various groups thronged the event, including school pupils and representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Environmental Management Agency (EMA), Environment Africa, Harare City Council, and Miracle Missions. Together we cleared litter around the Spar Letombo shopping centre, donated cans to a recycling company, and cleared blocked drainage pipes to avert flooding in the rain season.

Our aim, as always, was to engage the community in a local initiative, showing them how to be responsive to the environment. Instead of just complaining about how dirty the community is or what the City fathers are not doing, they are encouraged to become responsible citizens, to help where they can and to find sustainable solutions to the problems around them.
